Australian car belt pioneers, the pioneers of the car
The world of car-belt technology is in a period of rapid change.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first commercially successful car belt and its creator, George Ritchie, is among the few people who still remember the invention.
“The car belt was invented in the 1860s,” Mr Ritchie says.
“People didn’t think about it very much.”
But there was a huge demand for them in the late 19th century.
“A lot of people were driving around and putting belts on their cars, and they weren’t really aware of the consequences,” Mr Tully says.
He recalls the first car belt being bought at the Adelaide Fair in 1862 and it had a hole in the bottom of the belt that allowed the belt to slide down.
“That was a very unusual invention, a very innovative invention,” he says.
In the mid-19th century, car-belts were also being developed in the United States.
The first was designed by a Frenchman called Louis Dupin.
He patented the belt in 1882 and it was sold to American engineer John Deere in 1884.
The belt, which had an elastic band, was used by people like John C. Calhoun, who founded the US Army in 1874, and John Ritchie.
“He was the first to get rid of a belt in a vehicle and I guess you could call it a car belt,” Mr Pemberton says.
Today, about 70% of US vehicles are equipped with car belts, but that number is set to rise by more than a third by 2025.
The new technology was developed by car manufacturers, such as Ford, GM and Chrysler, as well as others, including Mercedes Benz, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG.
Mr Ritchys invention was called a “belt system”.
“It’s like a belt that slides down, and you pull it,” he said.
I think it made cars safer, it made them more efficient, it’s just amazing what it did.” “
I think it’s probably the greatest invention in the history of cars.

Mr Tullys belt was the work of a car manufacturer called Hodge, which was based in Adelaide.

“It was designed as a way to carry a passenger.”
“I’ve seen cars and I’ve seen people on the road without any belts,” he adds.
“So that was probably the biggest innovation in a belt system in the world.”
